It's been a busy few weeks for our search dog teams in the South West with a number of requests from Devon & Cornwall Police to assist with missing person searches. Thankfully, with successful outcomes. A summary can be found below:
06/01/24 - Bodmin
Four Search Dog Teams (Mac, Izzy, Teg and Merryn) assisted East Cornwall Search & Rescue Team in locating a high-risk missing person with dementia. During the search of our allocated areas, the missing person was thankfully located by a police foot team and the East Cornwall SRT doctor and paramedic were quickly deployed to the person's location. She was then transferred to the police station where she was given a full check over. A good, collaborative effort by everyone involved.
10/01/24 - Par
We were requested to assist East Cornwall Search & Rescue Team with the search for a high-risk missing person. Search Dog teams were en-route as foot teams were already out searching. The ECSRT spokesperson stated, 'With the recent Facebook plea to the general public, information of our missing person came in that placed them outside of our immediate search area. Police units were deployed to a new location and subsequently found our missing person safe and well.'
18-19/01/24 - Burrator
Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team - Tavistock teams members, including Search Dog Pip, were deployed in sub-zero temperatures and searched woodland and open moorland for a high-risk missing person. Teams were re-deployed the next day to continue the multi-agency search. The person was located in woodland by a DSRT Tavistock team, and his condition was assessed. A successful outcome to a lengthy search incident.
23/01/24 - Penzance
We were called to assist with a search for a high-risk missing person in Penzance. Search Dog Merryn from West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team attended. Alongside foot teams and Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team colleagues, they were given a number of priority areas to cover across the town. These included steep woodland and open spaces. After almost six hours searching in Storm Jocelyn, all of the areas were completed and they were stood down by the Police as further investigations continued.
24/01/24 - Penzance
Search Dogs Merryn and Tio attended a re-tasking in Penzance. Search Dogs Amber, Bonnie and Copper were on stand-by. As the first search areas were being completed the missing male was thankfully located by one of the West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team team members. He was immediately treated by a team cas-carer while further teams brought rewarming and medical kit. They were then able to transport him to a nearby road-head, and into the care of Ambulance Paramedics. A life saved.
Our volunteer Search Dog teams are incredibly important on missing person searches. They can access places that foot teams may not be able to and cover large areas in a shorter amount of time. Thanks to our supporters, sponsors and dogsbodies for enabling us to do our vital work. #poweredbyburns... See MoreSee Less
